Amos 1-5
This kind of scares me. Perhaps that's not an unfounded fear. Amos 4:12 - "Prepare to meet your God, O Israel." Why does this frighten me? Well, in Israel, things are good at this time. Everything is A-OK. People are doing great. But there is one voice that rises above and says, "Hey - We're not OK with God. We're not following Him. Repent and be saved, or prepare to meet your God." That's Amos. Amos made it into the Bible. In other words, there was something to what he was saying. He was God's messenger.
Sometimes I'll be walking on a college campus, or in a big city, or to Shea Stadium, and there's someone there. A lonely, desperate voice. "Repent! Or prepare to meet your God!" sounds like something they would say. But we just walk past and shake our heads. "Crazy person. We're alright with God," we think to ourselves. Are we, really? Things seem to be good, right? We're OK with God, right? That's what we tell ourselves. But then there's that one voice. Crazy? Maybe. Maybe not.
Tomorrow: Amos 6-9
